The Department of General Services announced today that it has been honored by the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce with the group’s 2013 Diversity Award. The award is given to organizations that advocate and are leaders in reaching out to underrepresented and emerging small business.
This is the first time the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce (CAHCC) has honored a state government agency with the Diversity Award, which was presented to DGS Procurement Division representatives at the CAHCC annual statewide conference in Oakland.
As the state’s business manager, DGS oversees state contracting and procurement practices including the certification of small businesses to help them compete for a share of the approximately $8 billion the state spends annually for goods, services, information technology, construction and public works. Most recently, the state has directed $2.4 billion to small businesses.
