Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. has proclaimed May as Building Safety Month in California.
Building Safety Month is sponsored each year by the International Code Council (ICC) during the month of May. State agencies and other stakeholder organizations have long aligned with ICC’s campaign for safe building in California.
The California Building Standards Commission, a commission within the Department of General Services, spearheads the California campaign each year and is joined by the Division of the State Architect, Department of Housing and Community Development, Office of the State Fire Marshal, Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, California Energy Commission, California Department of Public Health, State Lands Commission, Board of State and Community Corrections, and Seismic Safety Commission.
Stakeholder organizations and constituents throughout the state including the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, National Fire Protection Association, American Institute of Architects Council, developers, contractors, architects, designers, construction trades, manufacturers, and local, state and county building departments labor tirelessly year round to ensure that California buildings are safe and structurally sound.
This year’s theme is Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes!
Throughout the month of May the following issues will be featured:
- Week 1: Fire Safety- Build to Code
- Week 2: Bounce Back Faster from Disaster- Build to Code
- Week 3: Water Safe, Water Smart- Build to Code
- Week 4: Save Energy- Build to Code
In a state that annually experiences the devastation of wild fires, is well known for earthquakes, is currently in the midst of the severest drought on record, and is mandated to conserve energy and minimize the impact that buildings have on the environment– Building Safety Month May 2015 sends a message that every Californian can benefit from.
